Georgia Residents Could Get $500 Tax Rebates: What You Need to Know

$500 Tax Rebate

Many people in Georgia might soon get a little extra money from the government — up to $500! This is because of a new program called the $500 Tax Rebate, designed to give money back to taxpayers like you. Let’s break down what’s happening, who’s eligible, and how you can get your rebate.

What’s the $500 Tax Rebate All About?

In April 2025, Georgia’s Governor, Brian Kemp, signed a new law called House Bill 112. This law puts aside $1 billion to give back to people who paid state taxes. It’s the third time Georgia has done this, with similar rebates given out in 2022 and 2023. This rebate is part of the state’s plan to help families and individuals keep more of their money.

Who Qualifies for the Rebate?

To get the $500 Tax Rebate, you need to meet these requirements:

  • You filed your 2023 AND 2024 Georgia state income tax returns.
  • You owed state taxes in 2023.
  • You live full-time in Georgia.
  • You don’t have any debts with the Georgia Department of Revenue.

How Much Can You Get?

The rebate amount depends on your tax filing status:

Filing StatusMaximum Rebate Amount
Single filer or married, filing separatelyUp to $250
Head of householdUp to $375
Married, filing jointlyUp to $500

The exact amount you get depends on your 2023 tax liability (how much you owed).

How Will You Get the Money?

You’ll get your money in the same way you received your last tax refund:

  • Direct Deposit: If you chose direct deposit, it’ll go straight into your bank account.
  • Paper Check: If you filed by mail or didn’t choose direct deposit, you’ll get a check in the mail.

Most people should start seeing their rebates within 6 to 8 weeks after their 2024 tax return is processed.

Do You Have to Pay Taxes on the Rebate?

Good news — you won’t owe taxes on this rebate! It’s not considered taxable income, so you don’t need to worry about paying any extra taxes on it.

How to Check If You’re Eligible

You can find out if you qualify by using the Surplus Tax Refund Eligibility Tool on the Georgia Tax Center’s website. You’ll need:

  • Your Social Security Number or Tax ID Number
  • Your federal adjusted gross income from your 2023 tax return

Other Tax Changes in Georgia

Along with this rebate, Georgia has also passed House Bill 111, which lowers the state income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%. This means you’ll pay less in state taxes starting in 2025.

What Leaders Are Saying

Governor Brian Kemp: “Because we’ve managed our state’s resources wisely, we’re again able to return money to hardworking Georgians who know how best to use it.”

Frank O’Connell, Georgia’s Revenue Commissioner: “Our department is ready to get this third round of refunds out the door efficiently and securely.”
